At a time when Brooklyn, NY processed half of the sugar in the US, the Havemeyers & Elder Sugar Refinery was the largest sugar refinery in the world and continued to be a major processor of sugar into the 21st century. The Havermeyer dynasty controlled over 90% of the sugar production in the United States after consolidating much of the industry late in the 19th century. |

Tracing the sugar production back to Caribbean sources provides great insight into a bygone era of American industrialization.

Having operated continuously on the Williamsburg waterfront for 148 years, the site has been idle since Domino Sugar, its last industrial owners, ceased operations in 2004. This iconic waterfront landmark will be reanimated as never before when Two Trees Management Company begins a controlled demolition and preservation process that will prepare the grounds for integration into a 21st century vision.
